Corvette Cleveland Event Details Becoming Familiar with Event Terminology

Corvette Cleveland is a lot of fun, especially when you consider all of the great Social Events and numerous Member participation Events that are available throughout the Competition Season. Oh yes! We compete for points and standings within the NCCC East Ohio Region and even across the Nation.

Sportsmanship, camaraderie, friendly competition, and appreciation of our fellow members are all on display when we particpate in Car Show, Autocross, Rallye and Funkhana events. Below you will find a short guide to understanding many of the terms that are used when presenting or discussing any of these topics.

Sanctioned Events

SANCTIONS

What is a Sanction? A sanction from the NCCC (National Council of Corvette Clubs) is the formal approval for an event that allows it to be counted for points in the NCCC's national and regional competition programs. The NCCC uses sanctions to ensure that events meet consistent, fair standards for competition and judging.

POINTS

You will receive at least 3 points per sanction (see the flyer for number of sanctions per event) for attending the event. You will receive more points if you place in the top ranks in your class (autocross, rallies and funkhanas). Worker points (2) may be awarded to participants who only “work” the event and do not compete. Members can view their points on our website.

There are rewards for national, regional and club standings, especially for those getting over 200 points in a year.

GETTING THERE

If a caravan is planned (non-CC events only), you will receive a meeting time and location via email (“Accelerator”) from webmaster@corvettecleveland.org. There are no caravans for CC sponsored events, as we need to get to the venue early to set up. There is a “window” of time for registration listed on the flyer so make sure you plan ahead! Park in designated areas.

This is a “must” and is the only way you and your club receive points for your attending the event. The waiver is for insurance purposes. You will fill out a registration form and pay your money for the event. Once you are a full member, you will need your NCCC card (or number). A blank form is attached and it is recommended to “pre-fill” standard items (name, car, NCCC number, signature) to expedite your registration. You can copy these forms for future events.

You will get a display number for your car window (or for the drivers and passenger doors as in autocross), and possibly a dash plaque or other merch.

THINGS TO BRING

You may bring chairs, water, food (food trucks may be available, see flyers), cooler, bug spray, sun screen, shade (umbrella, canopy, clipboards, pens. For races be sure to also bring SNELL rated DOT helmet, appropriate clothing, window cleaner, towels, tire pressure gauge.

Car Shows

PARK

Park in designated areas only. Many members choose to remove convertible tops, roll down windows and lift the hood.

CLEANING TIPS

Clean your car the best you can. Some use waterless car detailing products (e.g. CARPRO) for the interior and exterior. Pay special attention to glass, windows, fingerprints and lint. Carpet should be vacuumed prior to arrival. A quick fix for lint is duct tape or a static roller. Many clean the wheel wells, tires and the nooks and crannies of the engine compartments.

DRIVERS MEETING

After registration is complete, a drivers meeting will be held to discuss ballot and voting.

VOTING

Vote only after the drivers meeting. Registrants are not permitted to vote for cars in their own club. Voting must be done in the specified time window and you must transcribe the car club abbreviations followed by the car number (e.g. CC 52, TT 2, etc…) on the ballot.

AWARDS

There is always a People’s choice award. In addition, there may be Sponsor awards. You must stay through the awards presentation (unless previously arranged with the RCD (regional competetion director) in order to receive credit/points for attending.

Autocross

PREP YOUR CAR

Numbers are assigned according to class. Place the number assigned on both the driver and passenger sides of your car where they will be easily seen by the timing trailer workers. If bringing your own, they must be 5” and readable. Post your tech sheet on the driver’s side dash.

Remove EVERYTHING from inside of your car except your helmet and gloves. Remove floor mats, along with hubcaps, trim rings, and center caps from wheels.

SAFETY/TIME FOR TECH

Your car needs to be inspected by designated members hosting the event. Your helmet will be checked for correct SNELL rating based on the NCCC rulebook. Other items checked are belts, hoses, battery hold down, seat belt, tires, wheel bearings, lug nuts, possible leaks, horn, and brakes. Stickers are placed on driver’s side window and helmet to indicate a passed “tech”. COURSE MAP/WALK THE COURSE

Look at the map of the course posted and make sure to give yourself enough time to walk the course a few times. The course may change on a 2-day event.

DRIVERS MEETING

After registration and tech is complete, a drivers meeting will be held to discuss event info, rules, and penalties. The running order for the day for each car class will be discussed.

GET READY TO ROLL

You will line up according to driver’s meeting instruction and be pre-staged and then sent to the Starter. Pull up to the Starter and come to a complete stop. You may have to wait depending on your car class and running order.

MAKE YOUR RUN

Wait for the starter to signal you to start your run. They are in touch with the timing workers. After you complete your run, you may be directed to re-stage for a second run.

CHECK YOUR TIME

All run times are posted on a board in a general area. This is where you will find your name and car number along with your run time. Times are posted in class order so you can compare your times with others and yourselves. There are no awards but a high number of points can be awarded!

Rallye

THE BASICS

There must be a Driver and a Navigator! All rallies are timed but based on legal speed limits. You should have more than enough time to complete the event. Usually timing for wrong turns are built in to the event, so don’t feel the need to speed up to make up for lost time.

TYPES OF RALLIES

Picture: you will need to recognize landmarks or answer questions based on provided pictures.
Standard: a series of questions to answer to determine your route or things you have seen along the way
Poker: normally arrive at checkpoints and a new card is drawn at each; the best poker hand wins!

DRIVERS MEETING

After registration is complete, a drivers meeting will be held to discuss event info and rules. Specific instructions include how the Rallye is supposed to run, i.e. how to get from point A to point B, things/clues to look out for, and possibly a puzzle or two to complete along the way. This is the time the Navigator should be taking notes and you will likely be given an answer sheet with some questions.

READY, SET, GO… AND THE FUN BEGINS!

Cars may be sent out in order, or another fashion. Always ask!

The navigator now has the task of getting you off on the right foot. DO NOT FOLLOW THE OTHER CORVETTES!! In some case there are different routes for different cars (if last minute instructions were given). There are a lot of variations on the routes/games for different rallies. There is a time interval in which you will need to check in at the finish. In some cases, speed is not the winner. This would have been explained at the drivers meeting.

At the finish, you will turn in your navigation sheet/ANSWERS where they will note your finish time. Some questions may be predesignated as “tie breaker” ones. There is usually a place to eat and meet with the other participants while the host grades your answers.

WHAT IF I GET LOST?

It doesn’t happen often, but it could. You may be given a sealed envelope at the start of the Rallye. It has the location at the end where all will finally meet. Once this envelope is opened, you receive a DNF (Did Not Finish) and will receive no points for the event.

AWARDS

The driver and the navigator with the most correct answers and timing according to the rules will win awards along with club points for their finish.

Funkhana

A WHAT???

A Funkhana is an event for points that often includes some gimmick activities such as ring toss, putt-putt golf, hula-hoop, hop-scotch, bean-bag toss, scrabble, puzzles and anything else that requires driver and/or navigator teamwork. These events are usually timed.

Funkhanas can be held car-less (no car at all), while others might have you start in a car and end up without the car. Some have you switch rolls as driver and navigator. Some involve driving your car to check points or "stations" where the driver and/or navigator will have to perform the designated activity.

A Navigator and a Driver must be present. Members can team up with others as needed, especially in the car-less events.

In most cases, “tie-breaker” points are assigned similar to rolling dice during registration.

DRIVERS MEETING

After registration is complete, a drivers meeting will be held to discuss event info and rules. Specific instructions and usually an information sheet is provided to list the rules of the games.

AWARDS

Winners and runners-up can accumulate more points than just completing the event. Awards are not usually presented.
